What is a Skyful of Wings About?
What's in a Name?
There are certain times when I look outside my study window (I am lucky enough to live in a rural part of south west Wales), that I see flocks of jackdaws and rooks parading over the church spire and distant hills. It literally is a skyful of wings - all containing separate characters but moving as one. It is one of the best representations of my mind at work that I can thinks of: lots of different interests and thoughts, but all part of me and with most of them connected to a theme - that of nature.
This blog was originally going to be something else - I hadn’t quite settled on where I was going, let alone where I wanted to land! Everything was in a state of flux: I had had six years of crises, things happening that I had no control of but which badly affected my mental health and ability to write. Last year we attempted to sell our house: it was way too big for us and we didn’t have enough money. The market had other ideas: despite it being in a desirable location, a sound property with no serious defects, and a handy annexe to boot, we only had two, yes two viewings in a year. After a while, and lowering the price to a stupid level, we had a rethink. After all, we had come to love the place and its wildlife, loved being able to walk into town while retaining a rural aspect, loved not being overlooked, and loved the space it gave us. All we needed was enough money to keep us going for a while.
To cut a long story short, we released equity - and we’re staying - for a few more years at least! Plus, we seem to be at the end of all our other problems. For the first time in six years, I feel a burden has been lifted and I can write again and not see life through a grey haze! And I am clear now, on what direction this blog is going in.It will be about our life here, clearing the garden, writing about the wildlife, and also looking at how being in nature is the perfect antidote to all of the modern life shit thrown at our ‘primitive’ brains.
You see, now all the wings are heading the same way, beating with a purpose through the blue sky overhead. I hope you enjoy the journey and even, maybe, get a little bit inspired too!
